What the Zepbound, Mounjaro and Wegovy pen sheets say

The Wegovy instructions say to put the used pen in an FDA-cleared sharps disposal container right away, and not in household trash. They also say not to recycle the pen or the sharps container. The Zepbound single-dose pen sheet and the Mounjaro single-dose pen sheet use the same disposal lines: FDA-cleared container right away, not household trash, and do not recycle the container.

The Zepbound KwikPen sheet is the exception on this list. It says to put used pen needles in an FDA-cleared sharps container, and that the used pen, after the needle is off, can go in household trash or in a sharps container. That line is for the KwikPen sheet. It is the wrong line for the single-dose Wegovy, Zepbound and Mounjaro pens above.

Which name is which molecule is on the GLP-1 drugs list. Mounjaro vs Zepbound is the tirzepatide pair. Ozempic vs Wegovy is the semaglutide pair. This page does not cover how to inject.

A BD 1.4 quart listing read for this page says the container is made for insulin syringes and pen needles only, and that other syringes do not fit. This page did not rank it for a whole Wegovy, Zepbound or Mounjaro pen, and it has no button here.

The container for a Zepbound or Mounjaro pen

The ranking rule was narrow. The Amazon buy box had to be sold by Amazon.com or the brand on October 26, 2026, and the listing had to name these pens. One listing met that buy-box rule. The clearance text is printed beside it because the listing's home-use line and the 510(k) indication are not the same sentence.

Oakridge Products, ASIN B00X6L1U6S

Buy box sold by the brand on October 26, 2026

Part number on the listing was 0354-1500-AMZ. This page did not match that part to a model in 510(k) K161180 or K141759.

  • Listing text says it is for disposal of Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro pens
  • K161180 clears Oak Ridge sharps containers for trained healthcare professionals, in areas with no unsupervised patient access
  • The listing says CDC approved. No CDC certificate for this ASIN was opened for this page
  • Listing size lines disagree: one says 10 in high by 12 in wide by 4.5 in deep, another says 9 in high and wide by 2 in deep

Some Amazon reviews say the bin holds about 15 to 20 pens. That is review text. This page did not count pens in a container.

K161180, decided June 9, 2016, clears Oak Ridge Products Sharps Containers as class II devices, product code MMK, under 21 CFR 880.5570. The indications say they are single-use disposable non-sterile containers for healthcare purposes, for hazardous sharps such as hypodermic needles, syringes, lancets and blood needles. The target population line says trained healthcare professionals. The same form says all the containers are for areas where there is no unsupervised patient access.

A later clearance, K141759, says the Oak Ridge model 0330-150M, a counterbalanced door on a medium container of about 2.9 gallons, is for areas that have unsupervised patient access. That model number is not the Amazon part 0354-1500-AMZ. GUDID record 00865273000061, model 0354-110B, is a 5.4 quart container, and it is also not the Amazon part number. This page does not treat the ASIN as any of those models.

If you do not have a cleared container

The Wegovy, Zepbound single-dose and Mounjaro sheets each allow a household container when an FDA-cleared one is not on hand. The container has to be made of heavy-duty plastic, able to close with a tight-fitting puncture-resistant lid so sharps cannot come out, upright and stable during use, leak-resistant, and labeled to warn that hazardous waste is inside.

FDA's consumer page describes the same features, and it says to follow community guidelines when the container is about three-quarters full. The pen sheets say "almost full" and point to the same FDA disposal page for state rules. Programs differ. Drop-off sites, household hazardous waste days, mail-back and special pickup are examples FDA lists. They are not a promise that your city offers each one.

Do not reuse a sharps container. The Wegovy sheet also says not to recycle the pen or the container, and not to throw them into household trash.

When the container is full

Stop before it overflows. FDA's consumer page, content current as of August 10, 2023, says overfilling raises the chance of a stick, and it tells people to follow local rules at about three-quarters full. The pen sheets say to follow community guidelines when the container is almost full, and that state or local law can apply.

Safe Needle Disposal, the number on that FDA page, is 1-800-643-1643.

Nutrition on these medicines is a different page. Protein powder, protein bars and electrolytes are the comparisons. This page does not calculate a dose.

Common questions

Where do I put a used Zepbound, Mounjaro or Wegovy pen?

For the US single-dose pens, the instruction sheets say an FDA-cleared sharps container, right away. The Zepbound KwikPen sheet is a different device and has its own line, above.

Can I throw the single-dose pen in the household trash?

The Wegovy, Zepbound single-dose and Mounjaro sheets say not to throw the pen in household trash. They also say not to recycle the sharps container.

What if I do not have an FDA-cleared sharps container?

Those sheets allow a heavy-duty plastic household container with a tight puncture-resistant lid, kept upright, leak-resistant, and labeled as hazardous waste.

Is the Oakridge bin cleared for home use?

K161180 clears Oak Ridge Products Sharps Containers for trained healthcare professionals, in areas with no unsupervised patient access. The Amazon listing markets home use. This page did not match part 0354-1500-AMZ to a model in that 510(k).

How full can the container get?

FDA's consumer page says about three-quarters full. The pen sheets say almost full, then community rules. Do not reuse the container.

Does every country use these sheets?

No. This page used the US sheets. Read the instructions that came with the pen you have.

Sources, methodology, and changes

Methodology. On October 26, 2026 we opened the US Wegovy label, the Zepbound and Mounjaro single-dose pen instructions, the Zepbound KwikPen instructions, FDA's consumer sharps page, 510(k) summaries K161180 and K141759, and the Amazon listing for ASIN B00X6L1U6S. The buy box that day was sold by Oakridge Products and shipped from Amazon. We did not fill a container or count pens. We did not open a CDC certificate for the ASIN.
