You already know the feeling. The plate looks like too much, so dinner becomes three bites and a promise to eat later. Later does not show up. A protein shake for GLP-1 users is the glass you can finish when the plate loses.
"How the hell do you eat enough protein when you don't want to eat anything?" That r/Semaglutide post drew more than 100 replies. It is the question this page is for.

Why protein drops, and why muscle comes up
In the STEP-1 body-composition substudy, people on semaglutide lost 19.3% of their fat mass and 9.7% of their lean mass over 68 weeks, measured by DEXA. Lean mass includes water and organs as well as muscle, so that 9.7% is not a muscle count. The longer version is semaglutide and muscle loss.
A 2025 joint advisory from the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, the American Society for Nutrition, the Obesity Medicine Association and The Obesity Society says low protein intake from a reduced appetite may add to muscle loss. It also says protein alone is not enough. Resistance training is part of the plan (Mozaffarian et al., 2025). A home scale can help you watch the trend between scans.
Small portions and a low appetite
The advisory does not hand you one number. It reports these proposed targets:
- 1.2 to 1.6 g of protein per kg of body weight a day during active weight reduction.
- Actual body weight can overestimate needs in people with obesity. Targets based on lean mass (1.5 g per kg of fat-free mass) or a simple 80 to 120 g a day are alternatives.
- Intake should not fall below 0.4 to 0.5 g per kg, and prolonged intake above 2 g per kg should be avoided.
It says to eat protein first at meals, and to pick lower-volume foods such as fish, eggs, Greek yogurt and cottage cheese. It also says some people can meet the target with high-protein shakes, bars and other fortified products. A bar is a different page: protein bars on a GLP-1. A registered dietitian can turn the range into your number. This page is not a calculator.
What sits easier on the stomach
Nausea is common when these medicines start or the dose goes up. A sweet 30 g shake can be the thing that sends you back to the couch. A few swaps help more than a new brand slogan.
- Whey isolate if dairy bothers you a little. Isolate is filtered, so there is less lactose than whey concentrate. It is still dairy.
- A smaller scoop on a bad morning. Momentous is 20 g and unflavored. You can stop at one scoop.
- Unflavored when sweet tastes turn. Stir it into yogurt, oatmeal or soup. The advisory notes shifts in taste preferences.
- A plant tub if you skip dairy. Orgain is the one I can link. The Amazon listing I opened on October 28, 2026 is peanut butter, so it is the wrong tub if you avoid peanuts.
- Food first if the powder smells wrong. Eggs, Greek yogurt and cottage cheese are still on the advisory's list.
A protein shake for GLP-1 users
A protein shake and a protein powder are the same job with a different amount of work. The powder is the tub. The shake is what you drink. Mix the powder with water or milk and you have the shake. Buy it in a bottle and you skip the shaker.
I would shake Transparent Labs when I can stand a vanilla tub. 28 g is a real share of a meal, the isolate line is NSF Certified for Sport, and the October 28 buy box was sold by the brand. Momentous is the unflavored 20 g tub, sold by Momentous US, for the day a big glass sounds awful. Orgain is the plant powder, sold by Amazon.com, at 21 g. The listing says 160 calories and 1 g of sugar per serving, from peas, brown rice, mung bean and chia, plus peanut.
A bottled Premier Protein shake is the no-mix version people mean by this search. I did not get a clean current buy box for one on October 28, 2026, so it stays off the buttons. Nutricost's unflavored isolate is the same story. If the seller is not Amazon.com or the brand, I do not link it.
The three buttons on the cards above are the listings I could verify that day.
Where a scoop fits
One Transparent Labs scoop is 28 g of protein. The 2025 advisory's simpler target is about 80 to 120 g a day. A scoop covers part of that range. The advisory also says protein alone is not enough to keep muscle, and resistance training is part of the plan. The DEXA numbers behind that worry are in semaglutide muscle loss.

A bathroom stand-in for those scans is a body-composition scale that shows arm, leg and trunk muscle. How that number differs from a clinic scan is DEXA vs a smart scale.
A bar is a smaller serving than a scoop. Best protein bars for GLP-1 users compares three brand labels. The same advisory names vitamin D, calcium, B12, or a multivitamin. That label check is best multivitamin for GLP-1 users.
Constipation is a different problem. Best fiber supplement on Ozempic is the psyllium comparison. The Wegovy label's dehydration line is in best electrolytes on a GLP-1. Used pens are sharps containers for Zepbound, Mounjaro and Wegovy. The molecule and the boxed warning are on the semaglutide profile and the semaglutide thyroid warning.

What I check on the tub
- Protein per scoop. 20 to 30 g covers a large share of a meal in a few sips.
- A certification you can look up. NSF Certified for Sport tests that the label matches the tub and screens for banned substances. I checked that list on October 10, 2026. The Amazon titles still said it for Transparent Labs and Momentous on October 28.
- The allergen line. Orgain's peanut butter tub is not a secret if you read the ingredients. Read them anyway.
- Sugar. The Orgain listing I opened says 1 g. Check the flavor you actually receive.
- Who sells it. The button is on only when the buy box was Amazon.com or the brand.
Common questions
What is the best protein powder for GLP-1 users?
Transparent Labs Grass-Fed Whey Isolate. It is 28 g of whey isolate, and the line is on the NSF Certified for Sport list I checked October 10, 2026. On October 28, 2026 the Amazon buy box was sold by Transparent Labs. This page does not rank powders by price.
What is a good protein shake for GLP-1 users?
Shake Transparent Labs with water or milk if you tolerate dairy. If a full glass is too much, use the 20 g Momentous scoop. A bottled shake is the no-mix option, and I did not confirm a Premier Protein buy box on October 28, so there is no button for one here.
How much protein should I eat on Ozempic or another GLP-1?
A 2025 joint advisory reports proposed targets of 1.2 to 1.6 g per kg of body weight a day during weight reduction, or about 80 to 120 g a day as a simpler target. Ask your prescriber or a dietitian for your number, especially if you have kidney disease.
Can a protein shake help with muscle loss on a GLP-1?
A shake can help you reach a protein target when appetite is low. The advisory says protein alone is not enough to keep muscle, and resistance training is also needed. The STEP-1 lean-mass figure is not a direct muscle count.
What protein powder is easiest on the stomach?
Whey isolate has less lactose than whey concentrate. Momentous at 20 g is the smaller scoop, and it is unflavored, so you can stir it into food. Orgain has no dairy. The tub I opened is peanut butter.
Is a protein shake or a protein powder better on a GLP-1?
A bottled shake needs no mixing. A powder lets you pour less on a day when a full scoop feels huge, and you can stir it into yogurt or oatmeal. The drinks on this page start as powder.
Are protein powders safe with GLP-1 medicines?
We did not find reliable interaction data in the sources reviewed. That does not mean there are no interactions. Protein powders are foods, and people with kidney disease should ask their care team about protein targets.
If I could only buy one
If I could only buy one, it's Transparent Labs whey isolate.

Sources, methodology, and changes
Methodology. On October 28, 2026 I opened the Amazon US buy boxes for Transparent Labs Grass-Fed Whey Isolate (French Vanilla, ASIN B0CQ3JTR6F), Momentous unflavored whey isolate (B0F144K892) and Orgain Organic Vegan Protein (peanut butter, B06W52PLFP). Transparent Labs was sold by Transparent Labs and ships from Amazon. Momentous was sold by Momentous US and ships from Amazon. Orgain was sold by Amazon.com. I copied protein per serving from those listings. I did not recheck the NSF Certified for Sport database that day. The October 10, 2026 check of that list is still the certification source, and both whey listings still said NSF Certified for Sport. I did not taste the powders. Nutricost and Premier Protein stayed off the buttons because I could not confirm a buy box sold by Amazon.com or the brand.
