The trade plays out below.
I'm Peptide Pete. I lift, I read the trials, and I am not a doctor. These two pills were never tested against each other, so I will not tell you which one "works better" for you. I can tell you which rules you would live with every morning. For a lot of people, that is the decision.
The morning rule
The Wegovy tablet label asks for this, every day (Wegovy prescribing information, NDA 218316):
- Take it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.
- Swallow it whole with up to 4 ounces of plain water. No other drinks.
- Wait at least 30 minutes before you eat, drink anything else, or take other oral medicines.
Four ounces is half a cup. That is a sip. If you take thyroid medicine, vitamins, or anything else in the morning, you will need to plan around that window with your prescriber.
Foundayo's label is shorter. Take it once a day, with or without food, and swallow the tablet whole. Do not break, crush, or chew it (Foundayo prescribing information).
Pete's take: If you already know you will not hold a 30-minute window, say that out loud to your prescriber before you pick. Coffee in that window breaks the Wegovy tablet label.
How each pill works
Both act on the GLP-1 receptor. They turn down appetite and slow how fast your stomach empties, the same family as Ozempic and Zepbound. The trial record for injectable semaglutide is a different product and a different set of studies. The head-to-head injection trial against tirzepatide is in semaglutide vs tirzepatide. Where these two pills sit next to Ozempic, Mounjaro, and Zepbound is the GLP-1 drugs list. The Wegovy tablet on its own, without the Foundayo comparison, is the Wegovy pill.
The Wegovy pill is semaglutide, the same peptide as the Ozempic and Wegovy shots. The tablet is co-formulated with salcaprozate sodium, an absorption enhancer the label abbreviates SNAC. The label says absorption happens mostly in the stomach, and that a longer wait after the tablet raises absorption. That is where the morning rule comes from.
Foundayo (orforglipron) is not a peptide. CNBC called it a small-molecule GLP-1 receptor agonist, and the US label gives it a chemical structure rather than a peptide sequence. FDA's drug center, in the April 1, 2026 approval announcement, called it "a GLP-1 receptor partial agonist pill which does not need to be taken on an empty stomach."
Pete's take: This is the nerdiest part of the comparison and also the most practical. One pill is a peptide that has to be babied through your stomach. The other was built to skip that problem.
Weight loss in the trials
These trials enrolled different people for different lengths of time. Do not subtract one number from the other and call it a winner.
WebMD's Foundayo page, which says it is summarizing the label, lists 11.2%, 8.4%, and 7.5%. Section 14 of the US label, checked October 17, 2026, lists 11.1%, 8.3%, and 7.4%. I am using the label.
Lilly's EU filing covered two studies. CNBC, citing the agency on October 16, 2026, said those studies included more than 4,740 adults and that people lost up to 11%. The two trials in the US label enrolled 3,127 adults without diabetes and 1,613 adults with type 2 diabetes, 4,740 in total. In the diabetes trial, the highest dose averaged 9.6% against 2.5% on placebo.

Pete's take: A few points of average weight loss matter. So does the pill you will take correctly 365 mornings a year. I would weigh both.
Side effects in the trials
Same family, same usual suspects: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, mostly early and while the prescriber is stepping the dose up. Your prescriber sets the dose and the step-ups.
In OASIS 4, the NEJM paper reported gastrointestinal adverse events in 74.0% of people on the Wegovy pill and 42.2% on placebo. On Foundayo, the EMA committee named nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea as the most common side effects. In the two weight trials pooled on the US label, gastrointestinal reactions were reported in 60%, 68%, and 69% across the three doses, and in 37% on placebo.
The Wegovy label carries the class warning about thyroid C-cell tumors in rodents, and it says not to use the drug with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) or with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). Foundayo's label has the same contraindication. It also says orforglipron itself is not active in rats or mice and did not produce tumors in those animals. The warning is there because other medicines in the class did, and because the human relevance of that finding is unknown.
Both labels say not to combine the drug with another GLP-1 receptor agonist.
Pete's take: The stomach stuff is why prescribers step the dose up slowly. Tell them early if it is rough. They adjust for this all the time.
Who might lean which way
You might lean toward the Wegovy pill if:
- You want the drug with the longest track record. Semaglutide has years of data behind the shots, which is a different formulation from this tablet.
- You already live with a "pill, then wait" morning, maybe because of thyroid medicine.
- The higher trial average matters most to you.
You might lean toward Foundayo if:
- Mornings are chaos and you will not hold a 30-minute window.
- You take other medicines you do not want to time around a pill.
- You have done fine on GLP-1s and want the least fuss.
Either way, it is your prescriber's call, with your history in front of them.
What the EU decision means
On October 15, 2026, the EMA's committee adopted a positive opinion recommending Foundayo for weight management and for type 2 diabetes in adults (EMA). A recommendation is not an approval. The European Commission issues the decision, and EMA says that decision comes within 67 days of receiving the recommendation (EMA, authorisation of medicines). CNBC reported that the Wegovy pill received EU approval in July 2026.
In the US, the Wegovy pill still leads on weekly prescriptions. Fierce Pharma's oral GLP-1 tracker, updated October 16, 2026, covered the Columbus Day week and cited IQVIA figures from Citi and Jefferies. Wegovy pill prescriptions dipped about 3% to roughly 173,500. Foundayo ticked up about 4% to 60,151, still under its earlier high of 64,268. That is about 2.9 Wegovy pill prescriptions for every Foundayo prescription that week.
Keeping your muscle on either pill
Any GLP-1 that drops your weight fast can take some muscle with it. That is where your effort pays off: lift 2 to 3 times a week, get protein at every meal, and track body composition, not only the scale. The deep dive is semaglutide and muscle loss.

Common questions
Can I take the Wegovy pill with coffee?
No. The label says plain water only, up to 4 ounces, then wait at least 30 minutes before food, other drinks, or other oral medicines.
Does Foundayo need an empty stomach?
No. The FDA label says once daily, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole.
Which pill causes more weight loss?
In separate trials, the Wegovy pill averaged 13.6% at 64 weeks on the FDA label, and Foundayo's highest dose averaged 11.1% at 72 weeks. They have never been tested head to head.
Is Foundayo approved in Europe?
Not yet. The EMA committee recommended it on October 15, 2026, and the European Commission makes the final call within 67 days of receiving that recommendation.
Is Foundayo a peptide?
No. It is a small-molecule GLP-1 receptor agonist. The Wegovy pill is semaglutide, a peptide, paired with an absorption helper called SNAC.
Can I switch from one to the other?
That is a prescriber decision. Both labels say not to combine them with another GLP-1.
If I could only buy one
